Here is the latest update to our 2016 crop rotation plan. As the season progresses, you will find hotlinks to each of the crops listed below. Click the link to learn more about that particular item and find helpful hints for CSA cooking.
I’d like to begin collecting your images and recipes as you use your shares to provide sustenance for your family and friends. Please leave pictures and recipes as posts in the Stony Ridge Farm Deliveries group on Facebook. If you are not on Facebook, please send me an email and I’ll upload for you. Farm shares are as much about community building as they are about the contents of your share box each week. Let’s start helping each other get the most flavor and nutrition from the weekly harvest! Thanks.
Egg shares will be extended to as many share members as possible each week. We currently harvest 3.5 dozen eggs per day, so that gives us at least 24+/- egg shares on average. Egg production waxes and wanes as the girls mature, molt and manage seasonal changes. On weeks when production is down, you will receive extra produce. I will also let you know if you are a share member outside of the 25 egg limitation. We have several share members who opt out of egg shares, so feel free to let me know if that is your preference.
I will be asking each share member if you have a preference between cooking greens and salad greens to answer some feedback we received last year about strong preferences for share content. This preference should be easy to manage.
Potting soil and plants will be offered again this April and May. Soil is available for purchase now - $5 for a 1 gallon bag. The soil is a handcrafted mixture of Leaf Grow compost and a recipe of fertilizers we’ve developed over the past 3 years to help us give the strongest starts to our plants.
We have also begun conversations with the WV Dept of Ag to get approval to offer meat chickens. These would be whole roasters and only available to share members at an as-you-go cost. We’ve ordered 50 broilers and the chicks arrive the first week in March. I’m sure we’ll post pics here when the postal carrier delivers them!
Finally, we’d very much like to begin preserving our summer harvests and be able to offer those products in the fall and winter along with the greens and herbs growing fresh in the tunnels. Again, those conversations have just begun and we’ll keep you posted. You’ll also see below that we’ve begun dreaming and visioning a 4-season share program. Once decisions are made and approvals are received we’ll announce its availability to existing share members first.
The Spring Share
(First Chicken Harvest (cost additional to basic share))
The Summer Share
Peppers, hot and sweet
(Second chicken harvest)
The Fall Share
Continuation of the summer crops
(Third chicken harvest)
The Winter Share
This is complete fantasy at this point
(Jellies & Jams)
(Final chicken harvest)
We completed a great deal of prep work this warm fall, which will take pressure off of the post-Jonas rebuild of the tunnels. Can’t begin to imagine how defeated we might feel otherwise.
We’re putting the finishing touches on our new website. Umtil it is launched, you can find the information about this year's share program here: http://bit.ly/SRFShare2016
